Taken just before we started the Serengetti safari tour, this is in the walking section open to everyone. In the background is a view of the type of truck that we will be on, and notice the sign in the foreground....

Now we begin our Serengetti Safari tour. This is a special as we are taken out in a truck to a normally restricted area of the park to interact with the animals. These are Impalas, and the background is the roller coaster Montu.

As our truck comes to a stop, this Eland Antelope eyes us curiously...

And then approaches us! We actually expected this and were able to feed them fresh melon.

And now for the giraffe adventure. Here is Sabo with his tongue extended to grasp a leaf. Their tongues are actually two colors, first a greyish color and then pink to act as a "sunscreen" because their tongues are exposed to the sun frequently.

Here he is, still for just a moment, his neck long and thin. Close enough to smell, they actually have special glands on their face to "mark" their trees they eat from. The smell is strong and pleasant, like a cross between eucalyptus and mint.

He pauses just a moment to take a bite from me. I actually got a "bite" myself. As he took the food I felt his teeth, but it didn't hurt.

I stop to pet him for a moment as he looks along the truck for more food. What amazing eyelashes they have!

Margaret stops to pet his silky neck. Right behind the ears they have the softest fur imaginable. Sabo is very frisky and doesn't stay still for long.
